We'll ignore the central fact that signing up to work in the Bush Adminstration would be like being dropped onto the Titanic: no sane person with a modest sense of self-preservation would sign up.   Those that would are either stunningly altruistic or blindly ideological...or both.

The problem, though, transcends that.  The Bush Administration has joined the Twilight Zone.

Bush basically doesn't understand what either competence or achievement means in the natural world.

In the ideological 'real' world that he and Karl live in, being competent means being the meanest, nastiest, more treacherous son of b&^$h on the block and means that achievement has no positive aspect.  No,  achievement means having 'put the fix in' and obliterated anyone or anything that isn't in lockstep with you.

These men are psychopaths, plain and simple.

They have no interest in doing the work we normally associate with the executive branch of government.  It's even unclear if they comprehend what that work might be. John DiIulio, a conservative who left the Bush Administration in disgust in '02 was dead on:  "It's just kids on Big Wheels, who talk politics and know nothing" (Ron Susskind 1/1/03 Esquire essay).

The lunatics are running the show....and I thought I'd never see a greater threat to human life than the bombs of the Cold War ams race.
If:

• lives weren't at risk,
• the economic and democratic future of our country wasn't going down the toilet
• the American people had the wits, training, discretion and knowledge of history to see the right wing for the bigoted, dangerous and self-righteous Luddites they are,

it would be a hoot.

I can envision what the rise of Nazism or Fascism must have felt something like this...the rising tide of vicious, greedy and ignorant opportunism that we feel lapping aorund our ankles today.
